It’s time for art!

Meet us at Los Angeles State Historic Park for our bi weekly community engagement program Art in the Park.

Hosted by our park volunteer Xochitl, join us on Wednesday December 11th from 3:00 to 5:00pm for a free art making workshop.

Held at the Los Angeles State Historic Park Welcome Pavilion, Art in The Park happens every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month!

All art supplies will be provided by the park and no prior skills are needed!

Meet Artemisia californica! Also known as cowboy

Meet Artemisia californica!
Also known as cowboy cologne, Artemisia californica is a native evergreen California sagebrush that is lush, aromatic, and drought-resistant. 👃

A member of the sunflower family, Artemisia californica can grow up to 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Native to western California and northwestern Baja California, its stems are slender, flexible, and covered with both hairless and fuzzy textures. The plant is also known for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies. 🦋 🐝

Artemisia californica is prized for its pleasant fragrance and can be used as a spice in cooking or brewed into tea. Thriving in full sunlight with minimal water during the summer months, it is rarely eaten by animals but provides valuable cover for small birds and animals that can nest within its branches and stems.

The plant earned the nickname “cowboy cologne” 🤠 because of its use during the Wild West era. Used as a natural deodorant by cowboys, Artemisia californica was also utilized by Indigenous Tongva communities for its medicinal properties. In particular, it was brewed into teas to treat respiratory illnesses and provide relief from gynecological issues such as menopause, menstrual cramps, and labor pains.

Share your input! The LA Historic State Park’s General Plan Amendment process involves a public outreach effort to gather input to help inform the department’s consideration of the LA ART project. There will be multiple opportunities for the public to comment and provide input to the proposed action.

Los Angeles State Historic Park, Rio de Los Angeles State Park, and Bowtie Parcel.

Special Event Notice – Renegade Craft Fair will be

Special Event Notice - Renegade Craft Fair will be taking place this weekend, Saturday 11/16 & Sunday, 11/17 from 10am to 4pm on LASHP's main lawn. This event is free and open to the public.

Load in will take place on Friday, November 15 and load out will take place on Monday, November 18.

Parking will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Restrooms by the ranger station will be closed on event days. Chemical toilets will be onsite and available for use.
